Church of St. Michael the Archangel (Belinsky)

Lermontovo Village, Belinsky Region, Penza Oblast.

The first wooden church at this place was constructed in the middle of the 18th century by the first owner of Tarkhany Village (Lermontovo Village) Yakov Dolgorukov and consecrated in honour of St. Nicholas.

Construction of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel was started in 1826 by the village owner Elizabeth Arsenyeva, grandmother of Mikhail Lermontov. The old church was moved to the village cemetery where it functioned as a chapel.

Mikhail Lermontov saw this church in the process of construction, while being on his first officer leave in Tarkhany in winter of 1836.

The construction was finished in 1839. The Church was consecrated in 1840.

It is believed that in the Church of St. Michael the Archangel Mikhail Lermontov lay in state for two days since 21 April 1842 when the coffin was delivered there from Pyatigorsk. He was buried on 23 April 1842.

At present, the Church's interior is reconstructed by efforts of the staff of Tarkhany Museum Reserve and restorers. Services are held.

Behind the Church's fence there is a chapel burial vault of the Lermontov family, where Mikhail Lermontov is buried.
