Dormition Cathedral, Assumption Cathedral (Kolomna)

14 Lazareva Street, the Kremlin, Kolomna.

Both the greatness and beauty of Dormition Cathedral are very eye-catching. It is not just an architectural monument; it is a symbol of the heart of ancient Kolomna.

The three-dome Cathedral of the Assumption was founded in 1379 by Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy. This was done after the Russian's first victory over the Golden Horde near the Vozhe River. A year later, in 1380, construction was finished.

It is said that Theophanes the Greek worked in the Cathedral in 1392. He painted the Deesis there, which was later moved to Moscow Kremlin's Cathedral of the Annunciation.

The Our Lady of Don Icon is the Cathedral's main sacred object. Dmitry Donskoy took it to war with him. It accompanied the Grand Prince during his feat of arms in the Battle of Kulikovo. The Icon of Our Lady, created by the prominent isograph Theophanes the Greek, was highly honoured by all Russians, especially Kolomna citizens. Tsar Ivan the Terrible also prayed to the Icon before he began his Kazan campaign. After defeating the enemy, he brought the wonder-working icon to Moscow and demanded that two exact copies of it be made for the Kolomna Cathedral of the Dormition.

The Cathedral was a wonderful Moscow style monument of the 14th and the 15th centuries. The lower church featured two altars. One alter was dedicated to the Dormition, while the other to St. Great-Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. In the upper church, there were altars dedicated to St. Nicetas the Martyr and St. Leonty of Rostov. Relics of St. John the Baptist and Rev. St. Stephen the Hymnographe were kept in the Cathedral. The Church was richly decorated and had silver-framed icons and embroidered covers, one of which was created by Ivan III's wife, the Grand Duchess Sophia Palaiologina. The Cathedral was also renowned for its library.

Since 1565 till the end of the 17th century, Kolomna bishops were buried in the Cathedral. Being founded by Dmitry Donskoy, the Cathedral existed until 1772. In 1772, Archbishop Joseph of Kolomna and Kashirskoye commanded to demolish the dilapidated cathedral. In the next ten years, a new church with five domes was constructed. It was consecrated by Platon Levshin, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, who was a prominent hierarch of the Russian Church.

In 1804, the Cathedral was repainted.

In the early 19th century, Archpriest Mikhail Drozdov, father of St. Philaret of Moscow and Kolomna, was the Cathedral's dean.

In 1880, the 500th Anniversary of the Battle of Kulikovo was celebrated in the Cathedral.

The year of 1929 was fatal for the temple. The Cathedral was shut down and looted. The tombs of Kolomna priests were destroyed.

It was not until 1989, after sixty shameless years, that the Cathedral was handed over to the believers. The ancient Kolomna sacred place was reborn.

It was decided from the very beginning to dedicate the Cathedral to the Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsk and Kolomna. Because of this, he took active part in the reconstruction of the building. The city administration financed most of the restoration works. Many organizations and citizens assisted in every possible way to help reconstruct the Dormition Cathedral. Teams of Moscow restorers ended their time and students in the icon-painting school of the Moscow Theological Academy painted the Cathedral and its iconostasis.

On 29 August 1999, the newly built cathedral was consecrated by Holy Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia.

One thousand and a half square metres (16,145 sq. ft) of wall paintings were reconstituted. Dormition Cathedral returned to its original splendour and grandeur. The consecration prayer says that it is a unique church, which is true to anyone who knows its history and beauty. Saints, who devoted their lives to faith and piety, look at us from the Cathedral's walls. Under their gaze you feel as if you truly are in Heaven.

The Orthodox Fraternity of St. Blessed Prince Dmitry Donskoy functions in the Cathedral.

An icon-painting workshop is held here. Works of Kolomna icon painters successfully compete with the best examples of contemporary Orthodox icons.
