The year 2007 marked the 460th anniversary of the death of the 85 Cherdyn's defenders during a battle with the Nogays. This battle took place on 6 January (Old Style) 1547 on the ice of the Vishera River, by the Kondratyeva Quarter's outpost, which protected Cherdyn from the south.
The Cherdynians honoured the slain soldiers, whom they called "slain fathers", as "Saints who sacrificed their souls in Faith for their friends!" In the second half of the 17th century at the latest, a wooden chapel in the name of the Saviour Not-Made-by-Hands was built.
In the 18th century, the Chapel was rebuilt in brick, using funds of the merchant Alin. The Chapel contained a cast-iron plate listing the names of the slain soldiers and an icon of the eponymous saints. Later, these relics would be kept at the Cherdyn Museum of Regional Studies. An icon of the slain soldiers is also kept in the St. John the Evangelist Church. The Chapel stood at a short distance from the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God and was loved and regularly attended by the town's inhabitants.
In 1933, the Chapel was demolished, with a wooden obelisk put on its site instead. For a long time, the memorable site remained desolate. In 1997, the year of the 450th anniversary of the death of the 85 defenders, by the joint effort of the Cherdyn District authorities, the Church and the Museum of Regional Studies, the memorable site was set in order, a wooden cross was erected and a plate containing the names of the slain soldiers was laid there. For the first time in many years, a memorial service was held to honour the soldiers.
In order to immortalise the memory of these heroic ancestors, the Cherdyn District authorities and the Complex for the Preservation of the Historical and Cultural Heritage and for Monument Conservation, a municipal institution, found an opportunity to start building a chapel on the site of the Memorial Cross erected to honour the distant event.
The ceremony of laying first bricks into the chapel of the 85 Russian Christians, the slain defenders of the town of Cherdyn, took place on 20 August 2005, as part of a series of solemn events called the Memorial Day for the Defenders of the Cherdyn Land, timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
At the ceremony, the honourable right to start the construction works was first granted to a priest, followed by Yury Loparev, the head of Cherdyn District, by A. Dyachkov, the town's head, and by an honourable guest, Nikolay Kobyakov, the CEO of Lukoil-Perm, LLC.
In September 2007, the cast-iron plate containing the names of the 85 soldiers returned from the Museum of Regional Studies to the Chapel, which had already been completed by then.
