Church of St. John the Evangelist (Kostroma)

4 Evgeniya Osetrova Street, Kostroma, tel.: +7 4942 57-81-43, +7 4972 57-87-69.

The Church of St. John the Evangelist is situated not far from St. Hypatius Monastery. Once, this was a kind of special economic zone (settlers were exempt from a number of taxes) created to attract people who would "feed" the monks. It had belonged to the Monastery since the 15th century. When, in the mid-17th century, monasteries were prohibited from owning villages, the monks managed to find a way around this prohibition by pointing out that the village was separated from the Monastery by a river (in fact, it was merely a pathetic creek, now hidden inside a pipe).

The buildings of the present-day village give a good idea, without significant distortions, of what the 17th-century village looked like. The wonderfully-preserved Church of St. John the Evangelist serves as the village's centre.

The stone Church of St. John the Evangelist, with its stone bell tower, was built in 1681–1687 to replace two earlier wooden churches; these were constructed in 1562 under a charter of Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow and were burned by a fire in 1681. The Church was built with the blessing of Patriarch Joachim and under the care of Archimandrite Anthony, the abbot of the St. Hypatius Monastery.

The side-chapel, containing altars in the name of St. Nicholas and in honour of the Icon of Our Lady of St. Theodore, was set up in 1901.
