Church of the Life-Giving Trinity (Zavolzhye)

1 Ryleyeva Street, Zavolzhye, tel.: +7 83169 5-40-26.

The foundations of the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity were laid as early as 1999. However, the construction was not completed due to underfunding.

In July 2003, on the initiative of enterprisers' managers, representatives of small and medium-sized businesses, and the community, a public non-commercial charitable foundation for support of Zavolzhye Church of the Life-Giving Trinity was created and registered in the Central Administration of the Ministry of Justice in Nizhny Novgorod Region. 35 people became founders. In November 2003, the foundation was blessed by Hierarch George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas. As for 5 June 2006, the foundation had 259,000 roubles contributed by people.

In 2006, construction of the Church was resumed.

The project was designed by architect Viktor Koval.

The building was built by masons of Pochayiv Lavra. Nizhny Novgorod artists were entrusted with painting of the walls.

In 2006, enterprise LLC Morion (Zlatosphera brand name, the town of Tryokhgorny) manufactured and assembled two domes of 4.8 and 7.7 metres (15.7 and 25.2 feet) in diameter with stainless-steel crosses. The domes were coated with copper to be gilded later.

It is known, that the crosses were manufactured by one of the Nizhny Novgorod Region companies. The crosses, the belfry's dome, and stars on the main dome of blue colour were gilded by sisters of Serafimo-Diveevsky Monastery.

On 2 December (Saturday) 2006, a long-waited event happened. The golden crosses were elevated above the domes of the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity still being in the process of construction. Main Orthodox symbols were consecrated by Archimandrite George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas himself. The ceremony was attended by many Zavolzhye citizens and guests of the town coming there from Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow.

Icons of the Church's icon stand were painted in Traditsiya icon-painting workshop situated in St. Alexander's Cathedral in Nizhny Novgorod.

The now-existing large one-dome brick Russian church with a high bell tower was consecrated on 10 July 2007.

On 6 October 2007, Archbishop George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas consecrated the altar in honour of SS. Constantine and Helen in the Church's lower side chapel. After the consecration, the first Divine Service was held in the side chapel.

After the Divine Service, Hierarch George addressed all those present emphasizing the importance of the event for Nizhny Novgorod diocese, especially for Zavolzhye town.

"The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity is one of the most beautiful churches of our diocese. Today, consecrating the altar, we're asking our God for mercy, for his special grace to this church, Zavolzhye, and the entire land of Nizhny Novgorod Region. Let people find a way to God in their hearts through this church", Archbishop George said.

He thanked all trustees and benefactors who helped to build the Church and presented awards to them.

Later, answering journalists' questions, Hierarch George said, that the altar was dedicated to SS. Constantine and Helen not by chance, "Doing this we wanted to thank one of the Church's trustees, who not just contributed a lot of money, but was the first one who responded our request for assistance in construction of the Church."

Hegumeness Sergiya, the Mother Superior of Serafimo-Diveevsky Monastery, donated the Icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov with his relics, the first Church's sacred object, to the Church.
