Church of St. Michael the Archangel (Yaroslavl)

67 Pervomaiskaya Street, Yaroslavl, tel.: +7 4852 72-78-43.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was founded in the first days of the Principality of Yroslavl. The Church was first mentioned in a book of the lives of Dukes Vasily and Konstantin of Yaroslavl, compiled by the monk Pachomius around 1530: "In the year 6723 (1215), in his lesser town of Yaroslavl, in his court, Grand Prince Konstantin Vsevolodovich built a stone church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, and in the same year, in the great city, by the gate, he began another, wooden, church of the St. Michael the Archangel, completing it in the same year." In St. Michael the Archangel's Church, a manuscript, dating from the 17th century, has survived; it provides similar information: "The original Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built in wood on this site, by the gate, which was later called St. Michael the Archangel's Gate after the Church, by Grand Prince Konstantin Vsevolodovich (the Wise), during his reign in Yaroslavl, in the year 1213 A. D., this church was consecrated in 1216 and stood for 79 years." If we adhere to this version, then it means that the wooden church was built even before the first stone Dormition Cathedral in Yaroslavl Kremlin.

In 1295, according to the same manuscript, on the site of the first church "Princess Anna, the second wife of the Blessed Saint Grand Prince Fyodor Rostislavovich and the daughter of Tsar Nogay of the Golden Horde, built a new church of St. Michael the Archangel, placed there a precious icon of Our Lady and decorated the church with gold, silver, and precious stones ... naming this church a cathedral." According to a legend, this was the palace church of the second dynasty of Yaroslavl princes, and the princess built it in memory of Michael, Prince Fyodor's son from his first marriage, who died as a child. It is commonly believed that the second wife of Prince Fyodor the Black was the daughter of Khan Mengu-Timur, not of Nogay.

The wooden Church of St. Michael the Archangel is mentioned in the 1646 Yaroslavl Census Book. The now-existing stone Church in the name of the Cathedral of St Michael the Archangel and the Other Heavenly Bodiless Powers, with the side-chapel of SS. Zosima and Sowatiy of Solovki, in the northern wing of the gallery was begun in 1657; its construction lasted for over 20 years, because the Church was consecrated after 1680. The original design paid tribute to the Yaroslavl architectural fashion of the 1650s: its very high semi-basement floor was designed for storing goods from the nearby marketplace, a heavy square bell tower, in the form of a tower, was added to its north-western corner and its house-like porch rose high on ramping arches. However, the Church's upper part was made in the spirit of a later period of Yaroslavl architecture, thus the large domes and drums, the tall windows and the hipped roof over the false zakomaras.

The heated church of the parish in the name of the Annunciation of Our Lady was set up in the gallery's southern wing after 1781. The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was painted in 1731 by an association of local masters whose names are told by the inscription on the southern wall: "These Yaroslavl icon painters laboured here in the name of the Lord: Fyodor Fyodorov, Semyon Ivanov, Ivan and another Ivan, both Nikitin, Aleksey Sergeyev, Aleksey Ivanov, Andrey Yemelyanov ... with his son Afonasy, Ivan Sergeyev, Matfey Sergeyev, Larion Ivanov, Ivan Stefanov, Ivan Afonasyev and Matfey Nikitin."

St. Michael the Archangel's Church had several revered icons placed there, according to a legend, by Princess Anna: over the holy door, there was an icon of Our Lady of Vladimir, in a silver revetment bearing embossed images of the saints of the "Greek Church"; and a church icon of St. Michael the Archangel, which is currently kept in the Tretyakov Gallery.

According to history, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel was shut down in 1924. All its sacred objects and valuables were confiscated at the same time. In 1994, the Church was handed back to the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Church has three altars:
The main altar, in honour of the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel and the Other Heavenly Bodiless Powers. Celebrated on 21 November (New Style).
The second altar (the winter church), in honour of the Annunciation to Our Most Holy Lady. Celebrated on 7 April (New Style).
The third altar (the side-chapel), in honour of the Venerable Saints Zosima and Sowatiy, the wonder-workers of Solovki. Celebrated on 21 August (New Style).
