Founded as a part of the State Literary Museum and separated afterwards, the State Museum of Alexander Pushkin prepared its first exposition during a surprisingly short period, three and a half years, which was opened on 6 June, 1961.

After the opening directly, the museum started to receive numerous presents related to Pushkin: portraits, books, manuscripts, gravures, chinaware, and furniture. Sometimes the museum was sent entire private collections, such as the Russian poetry collection gathered by I. N. Rozanov, books and applied art items collected by P. V. Gubar and gravures collected by Y. G. Zak.

One of the main tendencies of the museum development in the 1970s and the 1980s was establishing of several new museums in the places related to Pushkin. Thus Pushkin's apartment in the Arbat became a branch of the State Museum of Alexander Pushkin in 1986. Thanks to the efforts of the museum team, an exposition was opened in the building, where Sever hotel had been located in Pushkin time (6, Glinishevskiy Lane), the place, where Pushkin and Mitskevich had met in 1826. Employees of the museum also created an expo-centre in the Wulfs' House in Bernovo near Tver, where Pushkin often came to visit his friends, and in the Vyazemsky Estate in Ostafievo, in Podolsk district of Moscow region, where Pushkin, Karamzin, Zhukovsky and Gogol had been guests. Ostafievo, restored by the museum team in the beginning of the 1990s as a branch of the State Museum of Alexander Pushkin, is an independent museum of federal importance nowadays.

At the same time a new museum branch — Andrei Beliy's Apartment in 55, Arbat St. — was opened, which seemed to be not directly related to the subject of Pushkin. There were two reasons for the new branch opening: territorial closeness, it is a neighbour of the Pushkin Memorial in the Arbat, and the 20th Century collections of the State Museum of Alexander Pushkin. The Museum continues Pushkin tradition with an example of one of the most famous Silver Age representatives in poetry and literature Andrei Beliy.

In the year of Pushkin anniversary the museum received the building 36, in Staraya Basmannaya Street near the German Quarter, where poet's first years of childhood passed. The house had belonged to the uncle of Pushkin, Vasily Pushkin, the famous poet of the beginning of the 19th century. Alexander Pushkin often was a guest of this house.

Preparation for 200 years anniversary of the birth of Alexander Pushkin and its celebration were truly significant events in the museum history. In the year of 1995, Moscow's mayor Yury Luzhkov visited the museum, which was closed at that time due to serious damages and worn out utilities. It was his decision to renovate completely the buildings and to build a repository before the anniversary.

The reconstruction and renovation project was designed by a team of talented architects. Mospromstroy Company started indeed grandiose construction and renovation works in 1996. Thorough renovations of the wooden house in the country estate and the 18th century service outbuilding were completed within a short period left before the anniversary year. All utilities were replaced and the museum basement, where the visitors' recreation area with a cloakroom, a buffet, and souvenir and book shops were located, was built. The glass ceiling, which covers the country state yard, unites separate museum buildings and allows holding various activities at any time of the year. The December 1st, 1997, is the rebirth date of the museum, when it received the first group of visitors. That day was the last activity of 850 years of Moscow celebration and the first event on the Pushkin anniversary threshold.

In addition to expositions, some other facilities were opened, such as conference rooms, exhibition and concert halls, a library with a reading hall and play rooms for children.

Nowadays the museum does not only preserve traditions, which were founded forty years ago, but constantly realises new projects related to the different areas of its activities: scientific, educational, expositional and concert.
