The Drama and Comedy Theatre managed by K. Golovanov was founded in 1925. It was destined to serve a numerous army of railway employees.
In 1930, the Theatre was handed over to the Main Administration for Literature and Art Affairs (Glaviskusstvo) at the RSFSR Ministry of Education (Narkompros).
In 1931, the Theatre was fully administered by the Central Committee of the Rail Union and renamed the Moscow Theatre of Transport at the Central Committee of Railroad.
In 1934, the Moscow Art Theatre No.2 assumed art direction for the Theatre.
In April 1935, the Theatre was named after Nikolay Gogol to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the writer.
