Bust Monument to A. S. Pushkin in Primorsky Boulevard (Odessa)

Primorsky Boulevard, Odessa.

The first Ukrainian monument to A. S. Pushkin was erected in Odessa in 1889 at the initiative of the democratic community of the city.

The decision to construct the monument dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Pushkin's death (1887) was taken in 1881.

The funds for the monument were raised by subscription among the inhabitants of Odessa. Unfortunately, the necessary amount had never been collected; for this reason, the original design of a full-size sculpture was limited to a bust of the poet.

The monument is situated so that the Odessa City Hall is at its back. The point is that according to a legend the mayor of Odessa refused to allocate funds for the construction of the monument. Then, the inhabitants of the city who were determined to have the monument built it at their own expense, but positioned it as if Pushkin had turned his back to the City Hall to express his disrespect for the authorities.

The monument was not finished by the set deadline (1887) and opened on 16th April 1889 only.

In the pedestal, the following words were engraved: "To A. S. Pushkin from the citizens of Odessa."

The sculptor is Zh. Polonskaya, the architect is A. Vasiliev. The bust is cast in bronze (0.56 m or 1.84 ft.). The pedestal is 4.7 by 2.2 by 2.2 m (15.4 by 7.2 by 7.2 ft.), out of granite.
