Epiphany Monastery was founded by St. Daniel, the first Moscow prince, in 1296. He was a son of Blessed Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Moscow. St. Sergius of Radonezh' older brother Stefan was one the Monastery's first abbots.
Epiphany temple was built in 1342 and replaced an original wooden church, which was constructed in the time of Grand Prince Ivan the Moneybag (Kalita).
In 1624, the temple was reconstructed. It consists of two tiers. The lower church is the most ancient one and dates back to 1624. Its high altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan. The upper church, which is dedicated to the Epiphany and the Image of Edessa, was built in 1693.
In 1782, Epiphany Monastery, including the porch and stairs, was completely renovated, painted, and decorated with stucco.
In 1747, a side chapel, which is a dedication to St. George, was added from the north.
In Soviet times, the cathedral was used as a hostel. In the early 1980s, restoration works started. In the early 1990s, church services were resumed.
Construction of the Cathedral that is dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan was financed by Duke Dmitry Pozharsky as gratitude toward God for the victory over the Poles of 1620.
In 1650, a bell tower was built.
The Cathedral had been repeatedly reconstructed and finally completely demolished in 1936.
